Dear Deaf Sport Friends and Supporters
Below is the team South Africa as selected through various National trials held around the country from 31 January to 25 April 2009. Dates and venues of trials:
- Cycling: 31 January – 1 February 2009, Cape Town. These trials were conducted by the Cycling SA.
- Swimming: 14 March 2009, Durban. These trials were conducted by SSA in Kwazulu/Natal.
- Athletics: 21 March 2009, Germiston. These trials were conducted by Gauteng Central Athletics.
- Men’s soccer: 4 April 2009, Johannesburg. These trials were conducted by educators from schools for the Deaf who have experience in soccer coaching.
- Table Tennis, 25 April 2009, Tshwane. These trials were conducted by SATTB.

Chef de Mission: Julius was part of management of 2001 Deaflympic Games, deputy chef de mission for the 2005 Deaflympic Games. He is also the Deputy President of South African Deaf Sports Federation and currently manages SADSF Administrative office.
Deputy Chef de Mission: Albie was Chef de Mission for the 2001 Deaflympi Games. He is currently Treasurer of SADSF and has vast experience in organizing international events. |

Team Manager/coach: Petrus is a Deaf person and is currently chairperson of Western Cape Deaf Sports Federation. He represented South Africa at Deaflympic Games in Denmark as a cyclist. |
JOHAN REYNEKE |

Johann is a professional cyclist and has represented SA at the 2007 World Deaf Cycling Championships in US where he won a medal. He came first at the National trials. He is a medal contender. |

Terence has represented SA at the 2007 World Deaf Cycling Championships held in US and won 3 medals. He came 2nd at National trials and is a sure medal contender. |
CHRISTO BOTHA |

Christo has represented SA at the 2007 World Deaf Cycling Championships in the US. Though he did not win any medal, he came close. He came 3rd at the National trials and might surprise many at the Deaflympics. |
SWIMMING
TADHG SLATTERY (Deaf) |

Team Manager/Coach: Tadhg is a well-known Paralympian and has won medals with the Paralympic Team. He brings with him a wealth of experience to the team and his contribution so far is out of this world. He needs no introduction. |
TERENCE PARKIN |

Terence has entered in both cycling and swimming. He is the former Olympic medallist and won 13 medals at the 2005 Deaflympics. He has qualified for the Deaflympic Games at National trials. He is the cog that will hold the whole Team SA together and a number of medals await him. |
MARKO VAN NIEUWENHUIZEN |

Marko represented the SA at the 2005 Deaflympics and 2007 World Deaf Swimming Championships where he won medals in both events. He is a professional Swimmer and has qualified for the Deaflympic Games through Swim SA event. Marko is a medal contender. |

Shanon represented SA at 2005 Deaflympic Games and 2007 World Deaf Swimming Championships where he won medals in both events. He has qualified through National trials and is a medal contender. |

Johan is fairly new to the Deaflympic Games, but has swam in the mainstream events under Swim SA. He has qualified though National trials. He has potential. |

Peggy is a professional swimmer and participates in Swim SA events. She represented the country at the 2007 World Deaf Swimming Championships where she won a medal. She has qualified through Swim SA events and is a sure medal contender. |
ATHLETICS
JACKSOM MALINDI (Deaf) |

Team Manager: A former Deaflympics athlete, Jackson was the athletics coach in both 2005 Deaflympic Games and 2008 World Deaf Athletics Championships. Currently the chairperson of Free State Deaf Sports Federation and National athletics convenor, he has the experience needed to manage this team. |
DERRICK PEETE (Hearing) |

Coach: He was the athletics team manager at the 2008 World Deaf Athletics Championships. He has attended various athletics courses and has coached and managed Team Gauteng at various SA Games. He is the deputy Principal at Ekurhuleni School for the Deaf and is fluent in SASL. Derrick will also serve as interpreter for the whole Deaflympic team. |
LUNGILE VILAKAZI |

She is originally from Gauteng, but currently a student in Western Cape. Lungile reached the finals in Long Jump at the 2008 World Deaf Athletics Championships. She is a sure medal contender. |
SONIYA DLAMINI |

She is originally from Gauteng, but currently studying in North West. She qualified through National trials in the 100m and 200m events. She is currently working on her 200m and has been accepted to train at the University of Potchestroom. |
SIYANDA KOPOLO |

A versatile athlete, Siyanda has represented the Country at international events in 2 different codes in 2008. She is the reigning Eastern Cape Disabled Athlete of the Year. She has qualified for the 100m and 200m events through National trials and can pull off a huge surprise at the Games. |

Lisa has qualified through SAPS National Athletics Championships and was the overall female winner in javelin, discuss and shot-put. She also represented SA at the 2005 Deaflympics. She is a medal contender. |
MESHACK MASHABA |

He has represented SA at the 2008 World Deaf Athletics Championships. Meshack qualified for the Deaflympics through National trials at a time of 10.9 in 100m. He is currently working on bettering his 200m time and is a medal contender. |

He has qualified for the Deaflympics through National trials with a time of 11.3 in 100m. He is currently working on his 200m time and is a contender. |

Moses is a professional long distance runner. He has represented the country at the 2001 Deaflympic Games and won 3 medals. He has also won many medals under ASA. He has qualified in the 42.2 marathon through ASA and is a sure medal contender. |

Isaac is a professional long distance runner. He has represented SA at the 2005 Deaflympic Games and won a medal. He has also won many medals in ASA events. He has qualified for the 42.2 marathon though ASA and is a sure medal contender. |

Team manager/coach: Nthabiseng is also a table tennis player and has shown qualities as a coach and leader. She is the only member of the management who is a woman. Nthabiseng is currently working on bettering her coaching skills with the help of a professional coach in Bloemfontein. |

Brian led the pack at the National trials and though table tennis goes to the Deaflympic for the first time, he is sure to surprise many. |

Yandani has participated in many SATTB competitions and is the most experienced of all. Has also won many medals nationally and he too will surprise many. |

A late replacement, Phumza has the potential to become one of the best table tennis players. Through the exposure that Deaflympic Games will offer her, she will go further in this Game and become one of the medal contenders come 2013 Deaflympic Games. |

Young and gifted, Silindokuhle has the potential to become one of the best future table tennis players. Though the exposure that Deaflympic Games will offer her, SA will definitely be blessed with one of the gems. |
Hearing Federations were extensively involved in the selection of the Deaflympic team and all athletes who made the team were selected on merit. Most of these athletes are medal contenders and we have no doubt the team selected is one of the strongest possible.

Team Manager: Leonard was team manager when the team visited Botswana for a friendly in 2005 and when the team hosted Swaziland in the qualifiers. |

Coach: An educator at a school for the Deaf, Johann did a SAFA WP and Ajax CT Coaching Level 1 course, Ambassadors in Sport Level 1. Has coached Inter-Varsity League team as well as Cape Technikon team. He has several coaching honours between 1994 and 2005. |

A youthful goalkeeper who has shown ability beyond his age. A good handler of the high crosses and not afraid to play as a sweeper keeper. Has lots of international experience under his belt. |

This player makes the team tick both on and off the field. A highly respected player with professional and international experience. He anchors the midfield and is an excellent passer of the ball. |

A centre-half who has beautiful skill and loads of international experience to his name. He is able to play as a striker if needed. |

A left-half who has a shot like a canon and the speed of a bullet. He combines this well with his natural skill and talent as a footballer. Has international experience under his belt. |

A centre-half who has great skill and can unlock the tightest of defence with one defence-splitting pass. He will be allowed to roam wherever he wants to because, this way, he causes problems for the opposition. He is the youngest in the team and a great future lies ahead for him. |

A great player who is the target man and plays his role to near perfection. He holds the ball up well and has the ideal height for crosses from either side. He has international experience under his belt. |

A small-framed player with a big heart, strong and fights for the ball. He is not afraid to run for everything. He has international experience under his belt. |
MARCUS MOLOTO |

Good on the ground and with aerial balls. Very quick and accurate, packs powerful shot on target. He has high strike rate and has international experience under his name. |
The above soccer team was trimmed down after a 3 full day training camp from 13 to 15 June 2009 in Johannesburg. This is the best team that has ever been selected and we have no doubt they will give their all for the country at the 2009 Deaflympic Games.
A profile of each team member will be made available on the SADSF website www.sadsf.org.za on a regular basis so is a regular bulletin/update on the progress of the team.
